I discovered the delightful blog Crumpets and Tea via a tweet by the illustrious Stephen Fry.
Earlier this month the editor of Crumpets and Tea, Ashley Harnett, informed readers of the second Jane Austen Short Story Award. The award is given by Chawton House Library and the entry fee is only £10.
They say that their intention "is to publish the very best short fiction."
For full details go to their site, but briefly, they are looking for "short stories of 2,000-2,500 words in length" and the theme is "the heroes and villains in Jane Austen’s novels." First prize is £1,000 with two runners up of £200 each, plus all winners win a week’s writers’ retreat at Chawton House. Also "seventeen other shortlisted authors will receive £40 plus publication in the winners’ anthology".
The closing date is the 31st March 2011 so time to start scribbling. If you are a fan of Jane Austen—like me—then this could be the competition for you.
Good luck if you enter.
